December

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR   Your Executive team would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for a Happy New Year. We thank you for your continued support of the club and the direction we wish to take it. Here's to seeing you having a great time on your range in the coming year!

JANUARY MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL WEEK   Again this coming January we will be having three dedicated events at the church to allow you to renew your membership. We will be having two extra evenings (Jan 3rd and Jan 5th from 7-9PM) and a Saturday afternoon (Jan 7th from 1-3PM) to do your renewals as well as our Jan 10th meeting. Please bring your completed application form (get it here), your current range key, and cash or a cheque for $65 for one year, $130 for two years or $195 for three years. For those of you who have already paid for 2017 you will have to exchange your “A” key for next year’s key in January once the locks have been changed (Jan 2nd). We voted to increase our membership fee to eighty-five dollars ($85) in December - our first increase in over 12 years. This will come into effect on Jan 11th, 2017 so make sure you renew before the price goes up!

SCOUT APPRECIATION DAY AT THE RANGE 2016   On Saturday September 17th Fundy Shooting Sports welcomed 36 Scouts to our range for a day of firearms safety & target shooting. They had a great time experiencing the fun and challenge of using firearms. After a BBQ meal the Scouts were all presented with participant medals, club hats, compasses, NBWTF pencils, decals, postcards (as well as some candy), and Fox 40 whistles. Pictures are now on the site. Please click here to see them .

UNAPPROVED TARGET PLACEMENT - DAMAGE TO RANGE FURNITURE   I was at the range on Sunday and found that someone had placed a bunch of clay targets between the rubber matting and the top support 2” x 4” on the 100 yard target holders. This is an unacceptable practice as it destroys the supporting 2” x 4” when you hit it low on the clay. If you want to shoot clay targets then pin them to the center of the rubber matting or create your own clay holder out of a coat hanger that you can suspend from the 2” x 4” (photos attached). This way you are not destroying club property. Also, there are still members who are using staple guns to attached their targets. You should be using the push pins that the club provides. There is always an ample supply of push pins in the seacan.

NEGLIGENT DISCHARGE (ND) OF A FIREARM AT SAINT JOHN POLICE TRAINING RANGE   From the CBC: "An officer with the Saint John Police Force is in hospital after an accident Monday morning at a New Brunswick firing range. According to WorkSafeNB, the officer's injury was the result of an accidental discharge of a firearm during a training exercise. The officer's injuries are not life-threatening. Kennebecasis Valley Regional Police and WorkSafeNB are investigating the incident."

Once again we are reminded that there are no second chances when using firearms. ALWAYS keep SAFETY front of mind whenever handling firearms! Remember the four fundamental rules of firearms use:

ALL GUNS ARE LOADED

NEVER PUT YOUR FINGER ON THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO SHOOT YOUR TARGET

NEVER POINT A FIREARM AT ANYTHING YOU DON'T WANT TO DESTROY

ALWAYS BE SURE OF YOUR BACKSTOP AND WHAT'S BEYOND IT

Please refresh your memory with a review of our "Safety" section.

RANGE CLEAN UP DAY - MAY 7  Please plan on attending our range clean up on May 7. There is a large number of tasks that need to be completed to bring our range back to a presentable condition after a year of use. We will begin at 9:00 am. Dave Greene has an extensive list of work needing to be performed including painting the main gate, brush clearing, roof repairs on the seacan, target stand construction, rubber mat cutting, etc. Tools needed include shovels, rakes, hand tools, chain saws, brush cutters, generators, etc. Even if you can only spare an hour or two please come help your club.

March

SHOOTING STEEL TARGETS - APPROVED TARGETS ONLY   An unapproved steel target was found by members on the 100 yard target stand. Although it was a heavy steel plate (blind pipe flange) you can see it was already cratered and presented a ricochet hazard. It was immediately removed. All members are reminded that any targets placed at the range must be submitted to the executive and approved for use. Members are also reminded that steel core or steel jacketed ammunition (green tips, surplus SKS 7.62x39) CANNOT be used on ANY steel rifle targets. If you are unsure use a magnet on the bullet; if it sticks it's steel. Also remember that handgun steel targets CANNOT withstand rifle fire.

PLEASE READ THIS ARTICLE ON SHOOTING STEEL PLATES TO UNDERSTAND THE DANGERS OF IMPROPER TARGETS

February

SHOTGUN SHELL SPECIAL FOR MEMBERS   The club is now in possession of shotgun shells for this upcoming season. We have 100 cases of Federal Top Gun in 12GA, #8, 2 ¾”, 3 Dram (#TG1228) and 20 cases of Remington 20GA, #8, 2 ¾”, 2 .5 Dram (#20235). We were able to get preferential pricing this year to keep the price increase to only 6.25 percent over last year. Considering what the US dollar rate has done over the last few months this was a good deal. We are selling both sizes for $85.00 per case tax included (10 boxes of 25 rounds). Anyone wanting shells can contact either Dave Greene at dhgreene@nbnet.nb.ca or 650-5563 or Bill Nason at delta10mm@hotmail.com or 696-2279.

2016 MEMBERSHIPS   All “2016” memberships are now due and the discounted rate of $65 will apply until the end of March, at which time the price will be $75. We are also offering a two or three year membership for the discounted rate of $65 for each additional year for those who wish to do so. For those members who have purchased two or three year memberships and new members who joined late last year you will have to exchange your old range key for a new one as the locks at the range have already been changed. Please print off a copy of our application form from here and bring it completed with your money (correct change will help) or cheque to the meeting. If you can’t make the meeting, please contact Paul Richardson at 650-5065 to make other arrangements (FOR RENEWALS ONLY - NEW MEMBERS MUST ATTEND A MEETING FOR RANGE SAFETY ORIENTATION - NO EXCEPTIONS). Thanks to Paul for volunteering to assist the membership renewal process.

NEW FRONT GATE   A new lock enclosure has been installed on the main gate. There is no longer a chain to attach the lock. The left hand arm of the gate slides inside the right hand box which is more weather proof and hopefully will keep the lock from freezing this winter. Just remember to put the lock on the left hand side when you are using the range and secure it to the arm - remember the gate padlock is ALWAYS locked. Many thanks to member Roy MacDonald for making up the new box and installing it for us.

Thanks also to Troy Harnish for once again keeping the range plowed over the winter for the benefit of the entire membership. Please make sure you use the provided sand box to keep the hill from icing so Troy has a fighting chance to climb it with his backhoe.

CHANGES FOR SHOTGUN NIGHT   Over the last 5 years we have been able to hold our Wednesday night clay shoot fees at $5.00 per line of 25 clays. With the drop in the Canadian dollar our clay costs have been slowly rising and now we must raise our pricing. To put us in line with all the other clubs in the area the fee for shooting a round of 25 clays is now $6.00. With this in mind and to help in making change on shoot nights, we will be initiating a Prepaid Clay Card that the members can use. There is space for 20 rounds on each card and will be available at a discounted price of $110.00 for a full card ($10 saving) or you can purchase a half card for $55.00 ($5.00 saving). You can start buying them now to stock up for your summer shooting. Cards will be available at our monthly meetings.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS FOR 2016   Time to renew your membership! Please take the time to complete an application and return it to the executive at a regular monthly meeting. REMEMBER - The locks have been changed and your key won't work! PLEASE REMEMBER TO RETURN YOUR KEY FROM LAST YEAR! HELP THE CLUB CONTROL COSTS!  Please bring your completed membership renewal form, your old range key stamped “C” and your $65 for one year, $130 for two years or $195 for three years. If you could bring the exact change (that would be helpful) or a cheque will do as well. For those members who did purchase multi-year memberships or who joined the club late in the year (after Oct 1st ) you may come in to exchange your old “C” key for a new one. Please remember to bring in your membership card to confirm that you have already paid for 2016.

Thank you.

PETITION TO RETURN THE AR15 TO UNRESTRICTED   Please complete this petition which will compel the government to address this matter on the floor of the House of Commons. This new petition, once submitted upon collecting enough signatures, will be introduced long before the next election. The current sitting Prime Minister and his caucus will be obligated by law to respond upon being presented by MP Bob Zimmer who has graciously vetted this petition. Click this link to show your support. This rifle has been ultimately restricted purely because of cosmetic appearance of the rifle which does not make the rifle more dangerous. It has been assembled with modern day materials (plastic & aluminium) and that shouldn't be the merit to base a rifle for restricted classification as there are thousands of other rifles like it used on a day to day basis for legitimate purposes. This rifle is the most versatile hunting rifle in the world. The calibre can easily be changed to meet lawful provincial hunting requirements from small game to big game animals without the need to purchase multiple gaming rifles. Most importantly the Armalite Rifle - 15 was in fact legal to hunt with before the mid 1990's firearm classification changes and we hunters would like that opportunity restored.

DON PORTER - REST IN PEACE   It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our long time member Don Porter. Don was one you could count on to volunteer first for any club project or event. For years he was our cook at most of our range functions. He was our resource for any questions regarding Parliamentary procedures at our monthly meetings. Don was also the one who sent out our voice mail messages for those who didn’t have emails. Don will be greatly missed . Please Click here to read his obituary.

FIREARMS RETAILER IN MONCTON   We were asked to share the website of a firearms retailer in Moncton. They have an inventory of items that will be of interest to members.

October   CHANGES TO ATT'S   The new "common sense" rules regarding ATT's are now in effect. For a complete summary of the changes visit the RCMP website  or read this PDF summary.

FINAL SHOTGUN SHOOT SUNDAY OCTOBER 18   On Sunday October 18 at 1:00 PM, our final shotgun event for the season will be a “Flush”. This is where all 8 throwers are placed out in front of the shooters and each will throw a high inbound clay. With our wireless controller we can set the number of shooters from 5-10 or more people on the line at the same time and program the throwers to throw 25 clays for each shooter plus extras. For example, if we have 8 shooters then we will program the machines to throw 8 x 25 for 200 plus 25 extra for a total of 225 clays. Each shooter will take a full box of shells to the line and continue shooting until they are empty or the clays stop coming. If the clay is in the air it is fair to shoot. Cost is $5 a round. For those of you who have not yet attended one of our shotgun shoots this will be an easy and fun afternoon of shooting. Hope you can make it. Regards, David Greene, Treasurer & Shotgun Committee Chair, Fundy Shooting Sports Inc.

NOVEMBER MEETING CANCELLED   Please note that the regular monthly meeting for November has been cancelled due to members of the executive being unable to attend. Thanks for your understanding.

September   RANGE CLOSURE - MOOSE SEASON   Please be advised that the Mispec Range facility will be closed to all shooting for the entire week of moose hunting season (Monday September 21 to Sunday September 27). Thanks for your cooperation in helping our club be a good neighbour.

ELECTION 2015 - GET EDUCATED   The record of the federal Liberals regarding firearms is abundantly clear to any of us who own a gun. Unfortunately the NDP is trying to hide their agenda by removing their policy book from their website. However they forget that the internet has a long memory - the policy book is freely available. Please read page 15 , section 3.9, paragraph d. It clearly states they will allow provinces and territories to ban handguns. Further their leader Thomas Mulcair is on the record as saying he will give police the power to track every gun - a return to the registry! Please watch this video.

DANA RUSSELL MEMORIAL SHOTGUN SHOOT SEPTEMBER 19   Please note that the range will be closed for all other activity this Saturday from 9:00AM until 5:00PM . There is still time and room for anyone who is interested to sign up for a great day’s shooting. We are having our annual Dana Russell Memorial shotgun shoot on Saturday September 19/15 (rain date will be Sunday September 20th) starting at 9:00AM . The registration fee will be $50.00 to shoot 100 clays. We currently have only 18 spots confirmed out of our maximum of 30 shooters. For a club with 314 members I can’t believe we can’t get 30 members to commit to shooting! Come on people support your club. If you are interested contact either Bill Nason at delta10mm@hotmail.com or 696-2279 myself at dhgreene@nbnet.nb.ca or 674-1345 either by phone or e-mail in order to register. A BBQ will be included and there will be a draw for an IGA Condor over/under 12Ga shotgun. Everyone who is registered will get a ticket on the shotgun plus you may purchase up to two extra tickets on the gun for $10 each. Also, if you need any shotgun shells please let me know prior to the shoot so I can bring them with me. The price is $80.00 for a case of Federal #8, 3 dram, 2 ¾”. We also need volunteers to help out with registration the day of the shoot, scoring, filling the throwers with clays at the shoot. So let us know what you can do to pitch in.We look forward to seeing everyone there! Regards, David Greene

DANA RUSSELL MEMORIAL SHOTGUN SHOOT RESULTS   Dave Greene reports - We had 22 shooters in attendance. There was a three way tie for first place with Tom White, Andrew Ahern and Jim Harper all shooting a 87. Tom was declared the winner with 32 consecutive clays broken, well done Tom. Second place was awarded to Andrew Ahern and third to Jim Harper with 18 and 14 consecutive hits respectfully. Nikki Colwell won the IGA Condor 12 gauge over and under shotgun and had the Ladies High Score. Dave Anderson won the 10 gun safe and Ron Sessamen won the case of 12 gauge shells. The winner of the 50/50 draw was Joe Robertson. Our thanks to Wayne Johnson and Dave Anderson for cooking our lunch of fine range cuisine. Special mention to Thomas Alchorn who had to take one of the throwers apart and do field repairs to get us back up and running. I would also like to thank all the members present for pitching in and helping with the scoring, button pushing and filling the throwers with clays! Pictures are here.

RIFLE NIGHT?   There has been some interest in reviving "rifle night" at the range. If you are interested in chairing the committee please contact a member of the executive to volunteer. Please remember that our club relies on volunteers to function; without people willing to put in their own time events won't happen.

SHOTGUN CLINIC   Dave Greene is seeking feedback from members if there is any interest in a shotgun shooting skills clinic. If you are interested in becoming a better wing shooter please let Dave know so he can organize a day at the range.

HANDGUN CLINIC   Blake Tibbetts asks that any members interested in learning how to be a better shot with handguns to contact him as he would like to have an event at the range if there is enough interest.

May   SHOTGUN AMMO   Please be advised the club is offering Federal Target Load, 12 Gauge, #8 shot, 2 ¾”, 3 dram, 1 1/8 Oz of shot as well as Remington Gun Club Target Load, 20 Gauge, #8 shot, 2 ¾”, 2 ½ dram, 7/8 Oz of shot. The price for either size is $80.00 per case of 10 boxes of 25 rounds for a total of 250 rounds. With the current uncertain ammunition market the supply is not always guaranteed and the pricing has been steadily rising. I would encourage members to order their cases as soon as possible in order to have their ammo when they need it. If you postpone ordering you may lose out. What we have available is on a first come, first pay basis. If you want to place your order please contact either Dave Greene at 674-1345 or Bill Nason at 696-2279.  If you want to pick up the ammo at the meeting you must call ahead to ensure that we take it to the meeting!

Remember that we are a volunteer organization and if the membership doesn’t  pitch in the work will not get done. Even if you can only spare a few hours please come and help out. If you can use the range the range can use you!

RANGE CLEAN UP DAY UPDATE  In spite of terrible weather and cold temperatures a small group of dedicated members accomplished a great deal of work on Saturday May 23rd. Many thanks for their efforts in cleaning up and readying the range for another season. Special thanks to those who attended the work day but not limited to: > Don Porter > Phil Armstrong > Mike Armstrong > Paul Holder > Thomas Alchorn > Mitchell Fraser > Paul Richardson > Troy Harnish > Jeremy Day > Todd Power > Samuel Power > Brad Smith > Bill Nason > Dave Greene > Blake Tibbetts

RANGE CLEAN UP REPAIRS - DAMAGED WITHIN A WEEK  The following pictures show considerable damage to new lane markers and just replaced 2x4 railings. Also noted is shotgun damage to a lane marker at the 25 yard line (?!). It boggles the mind to think who is so stupid as to fire a shotgun loaded with #7 from a distance of about 15 feet and not expect it to damage the lane marker.

Damage to the rails was caused by balloons being stapled on as targets. Again, ZERO COMMON SENSE!

There are numerous buckets to hold spent brass at the 25/50 yard firing line but some Einstein went to the effort to place metal (HINT: THEY DON'T BURN!!!) casings in the BURN BARREL (guess why it's called that?).

As a reminder range rules are posted on the side of the main trailer. Please ensure you read and understand them and make every effort to minimize projectile damage to range furniture.

April   RANGE RENTAL   Please be advised that the Mispec Range facility has been rented for the following days: April 20, 21, 23, and 24 between the hours of 12:00pm and 5:00pm. Cost is $35 for the course and $15 for the test. Contact Blake Tibbetts if you wish to attend, seats are limited.

"BLACK BADGE" IPSC PISTOL COURSE  Jody Waring will be presenting a black badge course at our range in April. This course is required for individuals who wish to participate in organized practical pistol competitions. Please bear in mind this course is not geared for those that are brand new to the sport but to those who have some experience drawing “Safely” from a holster and are confident shooters. The cost is $125, which includes a years membership in IPSC. The course takes two days and requires a pistol (9mm or greater), holster, and approximately 400 to 500 rounds. Anyone that is interested please contact Jody -  ipscjody@yahoo.com / ipscjody@rogers.com or Blake Tibbetts.

CLUB LOGO JACKET & SHIRTS FOR SALE  Vice President Blake Tibbetts has sourced a lightweight shell jacket and high quality cotton polo style shirt that will have a club crest sewn on them. 2014

December   RANGE CLOSURE - MAJOR MAINTENANCE   The range will be closed from Monday December 22 to Wednesday December 24 for heavy equipment working on the pistol bay berms. THERE WILL BE NO SHOOTING OF ANY KIND AT THE RANGE DURING THIS TIME.

October   FINAL SHOTGUN SHOOT   On Sunday October 19 at noon, our final shotgun event for the season will be a “Flush”.

STEEL PISTOL SHOOT   On Sunday, October 26 we will be hosting a steel match for pistol shooters on the 50m range, the 100m range will stay open for members all day. Shooters will shoot stationary and knock down steel plates from a stationary position with score being the time to engage the targets. Multiple runs on courses of fire will be added together to calculate competitor scores. Distances will be from 12-25m. Handguns of any caliber (.22 included) are welcome to participate. Minimum round requirements will be 150, more if competitors agree to shoot additional courses of fire. We will also shoot the same courses of fire with our rim fire rifles as well for those who choose, you can shoot one or the other or both? Safety is paramount, and holster use is restricted to those who have training. Those who do not, will start at the low ready position with finger off of the trigger and safety applied. This will be a great opportunity for members to come out and try something new which I am sure you will all enjoy! If you don't want to shoot the match, come out and watch as spectators are welcome. Come out for a fun day of shooting with safety briefing at 9:00 am and first shots are at 9:30 am. If you would like to shoot the match but don't have a handgun or rim fire rifle, let us know as we should be able to accommodate you with loaner equipment. Please contact Jody Waring if you have any questions. (ipscjody@yahoo.com) Rain or shine, if it's wet we can shoot from under the firing point. Hope to see you there! Match fee is $10 all proceeds to the club. Regards, David Greene, Treasurer, Fundy Shooting Sports Inc.

ALL CALIBER CENTER FIRE RIFLE SHOOT   On Saturday November 8 there will be an all caliber center fire rifle shoot at the Mispec range. Participants will shoot at distances from 25 to 200 yards in standing (offhand), kneeling, and prone positions. This will be a service conditions style shoot meaning it will take place regardless of weather. Any caliber of center fire rifle is permitted as is any type of sight (open, telescopic, red dot, etc.). Think you're a pretty good shot? Prove it under real service conditions! Cost is only $20, starts at 9:00am and finishes at noon. For more information contact Blake Tibbetts at brasscasing@yahoo.ca

September   RANGE CLEANUP  There will be a general garbage pickup / firing line maintenance work detail on Saturday the 13th from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. Any members who can volunteer a few hours of their time are asked to please attend. Thanks!

RANGE CLOSED FOR MOOSE HUNTING SEASON  As is our practice the range will be closed to all shooting for the entire week of moose hunting season (Monday September 22 to Sunday September 27). Thanks for your cooperation in helping our club be a good neighbour.

RANGE CLOSED UPDATE  Unfortunately several members (and several non members, more on that later) shot at the range during our voluntary closure. It resulted in the following written complaint:

Blake Tibbetts responds on behalf of the club:

"Gentlemen, Mr XXXXXXX had contacted me the first of the week apologizing that he had used the range. He had completely forgotten about moose season and the range being closed, and asked if anyone knew that it was he. From my experience moose and deer become accustomed to the environment in which they live regardless of gun shots, traffic, noise etc unless they are directly threatened. We have been closing the range out of "courtesy" and it is a minor inconvenience to quite a few of our members including yours truly. Having said that in the interest of continuity and living peaceably with our neighbours (if in fact it is our neighbours that have put up this sign) I as well have resigned to not using the range during moose season. My suggestion is to contact the landowners that border the range property and identify if any have posted this sign. Although good public relations are paramount this sign is unacceptable and I take strong exception to being threatened. From what I have seen in the past we retain a good relationship with our neighbours, in fact recently we received  a request from one asking if we would mind closing the range for a few hours for his wedding celebration and we gladly complied. Good PR goes a long way and suggest we contact those that live nearby to identify any issues that may be outstanding and have them resolved."
Blake

In addition three individuals were using the range Friday and Saturday, with their vehicle parked outside the gate and the moose season range closure sign removed from the gate. When they were confronted by a club member they claimed to be members but would not show a membership card or give their names. They quickly packed up and left. There were three young men (mid twenties), one with tactical gear, leg holster, and at least one Sig handgun among the three handguns he had, plus a rifle in a rest at the covered firing point. Their vehicle is a later model black Jeep Liberty with a chrome push bar in the front that obscured the licence plate and black & chrome mag wheels. If in fact they are not members they would face severe criminal charges for illegally transporting restricted firearms without an ATT.

If anyone has information about these individuals please contact any member of the executive in confidentiality. Thank you.

August   RANGE RENTAL  Please be advised that the Mispec Range facility has been rented for the following days: August 15, 18, 19, 21, and 22 between the hours of 12:00pm and 5:00pm. The range will be unavailable to members on these days. Thanks for your cooperation with this valuable fund raising activity for our club! UPDATE - The 19th has been switched to the 25th!

RCMP GUN GRAB - HELP TO STOP IT!  Swiss Arms and CZ 858 Reclassification: A brief explanation of the gun ban by the RCMP (From CanadianGunNutz.com)

French Version: La reclassification des carabines Swiss Arms et CZ 858 : Brèves explications au sujet

I hope this brief can serve as a primer for those who try to understand and begin to follow the reclassification and prohibition issue of Swiss Arms and CZ858 rifles. This is not a complete article. It is more of the bare basics on the subject to help people to dive deeper into the different aspects of the issue.

Q: What firearms are affected?
A: Swiss Arms Rifles ( classic green rifle and carbines, and versions of different colours)
CZ 858 tactical 2P, 2V and 4P proofed after 2007 ( similar rifles made by CSA, CZ2003, VZ58 and FSN models are not prohibited as of now)

Q: How many of these firearms are in the hands of Canadians, and for how long?
A: There are approximately 12,000 of these firearms legally obtained by Canadians in the last 12 years.

Q: How are these firearms become “banned” or “prohibited”
A: The RCMP has access to something called “FRT”: firearms reference table. It is a database of all firearm models in Canada. The table includes the classification of each firearm model, whether it is “non-restricted”, “restricted” or outright illegal as “prohibited. The RCMP effectively banned the said firearms by changing the status of these firearms from either “non-restricted” or “restricted” to “prohibited. This is what we mean by “reclassification”.

Q: Has the government or the RCMP officially announced they are “reclassifying” said firearms to “prohibited”?
A: The “reclassification” was un-announced and completed without informing the public ahead. It was only confirmed when firearm activists were able to obtain screen shots of the FRT table on the computer.

Q: What is current situation?
A: The government has just been made aware of the situation. A 5 year amnesty is being tabled by the Minister of Public Safety. Details are not known yet.

Q: So what does it mean in “real life”, if I have one of these firearms?
A: Until the Amnesty becomes effective, if you and your firearm are being queried by a law enforcement officer together right now, it is reasonable to assume that when the law enforcement officer looks up the FRT, he will see that the firearm in your possession is a “prohibited” firearm.

Q: Is the Amnesty the final solution?
A: The Amnesty should be a temporary measure to prevent the owners from being prosecuted while a permanent solution is being sought.

Q: Are more firearms going to be “reclassified”?
A: We do not know yet.

Q: This is such an outrage! What can I do as a citizen, even though I am not interested in firearms.
A: Write and call your MP, as well as the PMO ( the Prime Minister Office) Tell them:

1) It is completely unacceptable for the RCMP to make ordinary Canadians criminals by quietly making reclassification and prohibiting legally obtained properties, without any input from the stakeholders and oversight by independent 3rd parties;

2) The way firearms are classified and “prohibited” is deeply flawed. The amnesty is a temporary measure. A permanent solution must be sought.

3) The current Firearms Act is the root of the problem. It is highly discriminating against sportsmen and semi automatic modern sporting rifles. The government needs to recognize semi automatic modern sporting rifles are the popular choice of Canadian sportsmen through changes to the Firearms Act.

SIGN IN/SIGN OUT - CLEAN UP YOUR TRASH!!!   Come on people, we shouldn't have to remind you of this. The range was a mess last Saturday before the Dana Russell Memorial Shotgun Shoot. Several members mentioned that they have arrived at the range and people already there had not bothered to sign in. If this unacceptable behavior continues drastic measures will be taken including fixed hours of operation with an attendant present. Wise up, and if you see someone being a litterbug or idiot report them so they can be expelled from the club.

Dana Russell Memorial Shotgun Shoot Results   The event took place on Saturday, September 7. The weather was excellent and 30 shooters participated. Chris McLaughlin had the top score of 88, John Leonard was second with 85, and John Roberts was third with 80. John Leonard won the Stevens shotgun. Notable too is that 5 of the top 10 shooters were from our club. Congratulations to our winners and thanks to all participants! Pictures are here.

May   SCOUTS AT THE RANGE   I just wanted to let the membership know that we had a very successful Scout Shoot on May 4th. We had 29 Scouts in attendance, around 20 parents, 8 Scout Leaders and 10 members. I would like to thank those members (Bill Nason, Blake Tibbetts, Paul Delaney, Don Porter, Tom Alchorn, Steve Wilbur, Joel Bury), John Kelly (our cook), and Leo Moorehouse (firearms safety presentation), who took the time to volunteer to ensure that the Scouts had a memorable day. We gave them some experience with .22LR and 20GA shotgun and were able to provide them with club hats, whistles and compasses.

I would also like to remind the membership that I will be sending in our registration forms for the Beretta (July 6th) and Browning (Aug 17th) Shoots in Fredericton by May 16th in order to get a preferential starting time. Please bring to the next meeting on May 14th the completed registration form, available on the Fredericton Trap and Skeet website, plus $20 registration fee for each shoot. It would be nice to send up 2 or 3 squads of 5 shooters from our club.

Our Wednesday night 5 Stand shotgun shoots have begun for the season so come on out and have some fun.

See you at the range!

RNBRA encourages participation of young shooters, at the championship last year a young 17 year old shooter, James Boyd, won the standing event with an impressive performance outshooting all the senior experienced shooters. We encourage you to come and enjoy the shoot and bring a young shooter with you, bring a son / daughter / nephew / niece, grandchild or any interested youth. Please circulate this message to the shooters in your club and encourage them to join shooters from around the province for this shoot. We are all part of a great fraternity, the fraternity of target shooters, so lets get together to enjoy our sport together.

See you on the range - Good Shooting

Bob Kierstead

President RNBRA

Please take the time to view the presentation.

We had 16 members in attendance and the winner was Tyler Collins with a score of 74/100, second was Tom Alcorn with 68/100 and third was Al Robichaud also with a 68/100. August   Range Rental  Please be advised that the Mispec Range facility has been rented for the following days: August 24, 27, 30, and 31 between the hours of 12:00pm and 5:00pm. The range will be unavailable to members on these days. Thanks for your cooperation with this valuable fund raising activity for our club!

July   New Sign At Range - Trespassers Warning  You will notice a new sign posted just past the entrance gate. We have had numerous issues in years past with armed trespassers using our range illegally.  This sign clearly states that only members (and their guests) can use our property; anyone else there with a gun is BREAKING THE LAW AND VIOLATING THE FIREARMS ACT. Telltale signs of non-members are vehicles parked outside the gate, the trailer is locked and no one is signed in, and the red flag is not raised. If you encounter anyone using the range feel free to ask to see their membership card - all members are required to carry it when on the property. If you encounter armed trespassers politely ask them to leave. If they become confrontational, leave the range and take note of their vehicle license. Immediately report the issue to police and the club executive.

June  "Kid's Day / Family Day at the Range" - Any Interest / Volunteers?  At the last monthly meeting before summer break it was proposed that a range day be held in August similar to our Scout event, only for club member families. A volunteer is needed to step up and organize the event otherwise it won't happen. If you're interested please contact Bill Nason.

May   WHERE IS THE RANGE SIGN?!-UPDATE  If you visit the range this week you may be surprised to see the entrance sign missing. Don't panic! It has been removed by the executive so it can be updated with our new club name and emblem. It should be back in place and better than ever very soon. Here it is!

April   RANGE RENTAL  Please note that the range will be unavailable from 12:00pm until 5:00pm on the following dates: April 2, 3, 5 and 16. Thanks for your cooperation.

"BLACK BADGE" IPSC PISTOL COURSE  Jody Waring has agreed to put on a black badge course at our range on April 14th & 15th. Anyone that is interested please contact Jody. More on the course from Jody:

Hey Guys, I was approached by Bill and Blake to see if I was available to put a course on and I agreed, no problem :D If interested, you might want to consider taking a look at gathering together some items that will be needed for the course. First off, a reliable pistol or revolver in 9mm or larger, 3-4 magazines or speedloaders, a belt mounted holster that covers the trigger guard, and belt mounted magazine pouches, or speed loader holders. You will also need quality eye and ear protection as well. For ammunition, I usually always tell students to bring 500 rounds to cover the course. It is intense and you will be amazed at how much you will learn in two days, its amazing! One thing I would like to mention is that I like to have students with an open mind, and not afraid to ask for help and ask questions. The material gets covered fairly quickly, but anyone who needs extra help gets it.
IPSC has a division for pretty much every handgun chambered in 9mm or larger. You should take a look at what you currently own, and see what division it fits in. For example: Your safe action pistols in 9mm, those being your Glocks, XD's, Beretta's, SIG's, Tanfoglio's, CZ's, Smith and Wesson M&P's, Ruger SR9's etc... would find a welcome home in the Production division. In this division, your first shot starts off double action, if your pistol has an external hammer. There is a revolver division, a Standard division which basically is any pistol in its ready condition with magazine inserted that fits in a regulated box limiting add-ons. No muzzle breaks, or optics allowed in Standard. Open Division is the top fuel racing division with red dot sights, muzzle brakes and free reign to use whatever you can muster in a gun 9mm or larger. We now have a "Classic" Division which is for your single stack 1911 pistols. As I mentioned, IPSC pretty well has everything covered! I could continue to go on and on, but I will leave this for now and allow those who are interested to sign up, and don't forget to ask questions! I welcome any questions you might have, I'm here to help, and look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to the sport of IPSC! Check out our website at www.ipscnb.ca for some further information, and the World organization at www.ipsc.org

I will need email confirmation so that I can email you the rulebook, test, and registration form, and please do so asap, and please only register if you are committed, otherwise you are taking a spot from someone who really wants to take it. Cost of the course is $125 which includes a 1 year membership to IPSC which is $60, so you get two days of instruction for $65!! Look forward to meeting you!!! There will be a meet and greet and a review of the tests one evening during the week of the course, date to be determined.

CLEAN UP DAY  We ask that you volunteer a few hours on Saturday April 28 starting at 10:00am to assist in bringing our range property back to a presentable condition after a year of use. Concrete pads were poured to mount clay throwers, target stands built, the rifle target holders were re-built, a floor put down in the trailer, a civic number erected at the entrance, a trailer load of garbage taken to the dump, as well as a general clean up of the whole range. Thanks Troy!

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind all members that it is your responsibility to clean up after yourself. If you take it to the range, take it home with you. There are plenty of barrels provided for garbage so please use them by picking up after yourself. If every member left the range as they found it we would have a world class facility. I strongly urge everyone to make the extra effort to keep the range clean.

Thank you in advance!

Please don't risk the reputation and good status of our club by violating this temporary closure of the pistol range. Thank you in advance for your compliance.

On behalf of the club, I would like to offer special thanks to Blake Tibbetts and Allan Robichaud for their work today. I sincerely appreciate your efforts on such short notice!

UPDATE! The work has been completed to the satisfaction of the CFO and the 25/50 yard pistol range is now reopened.

Range Basics / COMMON SENSE  We have been having some issues at our range regarding safety, misuse of steel targets, and members not cleaning up after themselves. So here are a few basic rules:

1)
NEVER  touch a firearm when someone is down range.

2) The
STEEL targets are for HANDGUN/SHOTGUN  use only except for the 100 yard steel gong which is open to rifles. DO NOT SHOOT AT  STEEL TARGETS WITH RIFLES!

3) The
SHOTGUN range is NEVER  to be used when someone else is shooting at the 25/50/100/200 yard lines.

4)
Clean up after yourselves!  If you brought it to the range, please take it home with you when you leave! Use the garbage barrels that have been provided to discard your used targets.

Failure to comply with the above rules may result in permanent expulsion from the club.

We have recently entered into an agreement with the Hampton Rifle and Pistol Club that both clubs shall report any infractions by members to the other club. Access to membership may be denied to both clubs if deemed necessary! In a nutshell:

If we don't want you as a member, they don't either! And if they don't want you as a member, neither do we!

I would like to thank all members in advance for their co-operation in observing and respecting the above mentioned range rules. Please feel free to contact myself or any other member of the executive with any questions or to report any infractions that are witnessed at the range.

Thanks!

Range Safety Officer Course    With the cooperation of the Royal New Brunswick Rifle Association, we will be presenting a Range Safety Officer training course. Date is set for Saturday, June 5th, at the NBCC Saint John campus, room C1105 - Start time is 9:00am. Cost of the course is $60 and must be paid in advance; the amount will be reimbursed by the club as long as you attend the course. Here is a description from the RNBRA:    Objective – the purpose of the Club Range Safety Officer course is to provide formal instruction and certification to local pistol / rifle shooting club members and individuals in the safe operation of club target shooting activities. The course focus is on the safe handling, movement and operation of pistols, rifles and their ammunition during club shooting activities. Course instructor is Bob Kierstead; he spent 22 years as Head Coach Canadian Olympic Shooting Team, 12 years as Head Coach Canadian Paralympic Shooting Team and 5 years as Head Coach Canadian Army CISM International Shooting Team. He holds an International Shooting Officials license certified by the International Shooting Sports Federation and has officiated provincial championships and national shooting championships across Canada for over 30 years and has officiated at international shooting championships around the world up to the World Championships. He is Master Instructor for New Brunswick for the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course. April    There will be a WORK DETAIL at the range on Saturday, April 24th, starting at 9:00am. The range is in poor shape after a busy year of use and we ask that any members who are able to please attend, even if only for a few hours, to help make our facility look it's best in time for our "Scouts At The Range" day.

Shovels, rakes, cordless drills, and circular saws are needed so we can tackle the big jobs we need to address: Target stands and gravel washouts. Of course there will be a complimentary "gourmet" lunchtime BBQ to fortify the troops!

Hope to see you there.

March    Once again we'll send at least two squads (10 members), or more, to the Beretta & Browning Sporting Clay shoots to be held at the Fredericton Trap and Skeet Club. The cost for this event is $55.00 with a pre-registration fee of $20.00 included. The Browning shoot will be held on August 14/10 and consists of 10 shooting stations with a total of 100 clays per person. The cost for this event is $50.00 with a pre-registration fee of $20.00 included. The balance for both shoots is due on the day of the event. These shoots make for a most enjoyable day of shooting with each station having a different presentation. It is really great practice for bird season and is a lot of fun and laughs. The FTSC puts on an extremely well run event and is the most enjoyable day of shooting you will ever have. Participants have been as old as 82 and as young as 12, open to men and women. Do not worry about your abilities as to how good or how fair a shot you are just come and have fun. It is a day you will never forget. Have a look at the FTSC web site at the link for more information: http://www.ft-sc.com/index.html

If you would like to come, please give me a call or send me an email to register. I would like to be able to send our registration off no later than the end of April in order to get a good starting time. Flights are at 9am, 12 noon and at 3pm. The 3 pm flight is the preferred one so we don't have to stand around all day waiting for the results and prizes. Both shoots are giving away a new shotgun on a draw basis, regardless of your score. See me at the next meeting on April 13/10 or give me a call.
